Association of Fish Farmers & Aqua-Culturists of Nigeria

Association of fish farmers and Aquaculturists of Nigeria is the first and most vibrant fish farmers association in Nigeria. The association has a spread in all the 36 states in Nigeria, FCT inclusive. The association started its operations in the early 1990s but was fully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (Nigeria) on the Twenty first day of October, 2005.

Ondo state chapter of AFFAN started it operations at around 2002 at Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Adegbemile, Akure with its first and second chairman being Evangelist Adeyemi and Pastor Obembe respectively. There has been transitions ever since with each executive teams recording successes in the dealings.

Ondo State Chapter of AFFAN today has a very strong nominal strength with financial member cutting across the three senatorial districts with Ondo northern, central and Southern senatorial districts having the headquarters in Ikare, Akure and Okitipupa respectively. Youth and women are fully represented in the Ondo state chapter of AFFAN. The population distribution is in the approximate of 50% youths, 30% women and 20% Elderly men.

The association is boastful of its cooperative society having financial strength of about 10 million Naira, with financial members of approximately 50 people.

Objectives of AFFAN
The objectives for which the association is established are:

  • To establish and maintain an association for persons and organizations concerned with and interest in fish farming and aquaculture, its management and industry in Nigeria.
  • To foster, expand production and improve the efficiency of fish farming and Aquaculture and related industries to the mutual advantage of members of the association and consumers.
  • To establish good relationship among all members and protect the interests of the association and give members or employees all such assistance as is possible and desirable.
  • To regulate and monitor standards in the practice of fish farming and aquaculture and prices of fish as laid down by association.
  • To monitor all legislation, regulations and measures which may directly or indirectly affect the interests of members.
  • To provide information to its members and the public and to the government on matters pertaining to fish farming and aquaculture generally by such means as publications, conferences, seminars, workshops, exhibition, etc.
  • To provide facilities for and engage in research and study of problems relating to fish farming and aquaculture such as pond construction, stocking, feeding, marketing, disease and all problems generally and make known the result of such enquiry, examinations and research by publishing same through appropriate media.
  • To establish and maintain a library and collection of literature, photographs, films and other materials relating to information and education in fish and aquaculture science, farming and industry for the benefit of members.
  • To Institute, establish and promote training courses, scholarships, grants, awards and prizes to encourage education in fish and aquaculture science, farming and management.
  • To confer, consult, maintain, contact and cooperate with any persons, association, societies, Institutions, or bodies or persons established in Nigeria or elsewhere having objects in whole or in part similar to those of the association in respect of matters within the objects of the association and to represent Nigerian fish farmers and aquaculture and industrialist nationally and internationally.
  • To collaborate as appreciate with the authorities and relevant establishment in Nigeria or elsewhere, in effecting the objectives of clauses (g), (h) and (I) hereof.
  • To organize and co-ordinate the activities of the state chapter of the association which shall be within the objectives of the association.
  • To amalgamate or affiliate with or to acquire or take over the undertaking of any institution or body having objects altogether or in part similar to those of the association, and not formed for profit, so however that any step so taken shall not enlarge the objects of the Association or involve any activity or disbursement of funds not conducive to such objects.
  • To purchase, taken or lease or in exchange hire or otherwise acquire any real or personal property and rights or privileges in any part of the world which the association may think necessary or convenient for the promotion of its objects and to construct, maintain and alter any buildings or erections necessary, convenient or fileted for the work of the Association.
  • To sell, let, mortgage, dispose of or turn to account all or any of the property or assets of the Association as may be thought expedient for the furtherance of its objects.
  • To prosecute or defend any suit before any court or tribunal as the Executive Council may deem necessary or expedient in the interest of the Association.
  • To borrow or raise money for the purpose of the Association on such terms and on such security (if any) as may be thought fit and to accept legacies, grants, donations or gifts for the furtherance of the objects of the association.
  • To invest the monies of the association not immediately required for its purposes, in such investments and securities as may be thought fit by the National Executive Council.
  • To do all or any of the above things in any part of the world whether as principals, agents trustees or otherwise.
  • To do all such other lawful things as are in the opinion of the association incidental or may be thought conducive to the attainment of the above objects or any of them.
